I only put a thing on this shelf after I have lived with it long enough to know what annoys me about it.
Winter air indoors is dry in a way we stop noticing. The heat comes on in October and by January the house is drier than most desert afternoons, and nobody ever thinks to check.
What I wanted was simple and turned out to be surprisingly hard to find. A tank big enough to last the whole night, so it is not a chore. An opening wide enough to actually get a hand inside and wash, because a humidifier you cannot clean properly is not worth owning. And cool mist, so there is no hot water sitting on a nightstand.
It shuts itself off when the tank runs dry. That was not negotiable for me.

Does the water get hot?
No. This is a cool-mist unit with no heating element, so nothing on the nightstand is ever hot to the touch.
How often should it be cleaned?
Rinse the tank every day you refill it and give the base a proper wash once a week. Standing water is the enemy of any humidifier.
Can I use tap water?
You can. If your water is very hard you may see white dust settle nearby, and distilled water stops that.
