Why it is in the cupboard

From Giulia

I only put a thing on this shelf after I have lived with it long enough to know what annoys me about it.

Nobody wants to flick on a ceiling light at three in the morning. It wakes up the whole house and it takes your eyes ten minutes to forgive you.

These sit low in the outlet and do nothing at all until someone walks past. Then a small warm pool of light, enough to show you the edge of the step and the doorway, and thirty seconds later it is dark again.

Amber rather than white, on purpose. White light at that hour is a slap. Amber is the colour of a hallway lamp left on downstairs, and it is much kinder to eyes that have been closed.

Questions readers ask
Do they stay on all night?

No. They light for thirty seconds after they sense movement, then switch off. That is what keeps them from becoming part of the wallpaper.

Will they run in daylight?

No. A dusk sensor keeps them off while the room is lit, so nothing is wasted during the day.

Do they cover the whole outlet?

No. The housing sits on the lower socket and leaves the upper one free.
